1902 -The beginning

Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala happens to be the first-ever industrial ayurvedic drug manufacturing facility in South India and it was established on October 12, 1902 (Vijayadashami day).

Let us begin by quoting a portion from the company’s vision statement, which was drafted by the visionary Dr. P S Varier, the founder, during the founding of this prestigious institution.

“As the process of collection, storage, sales, purchase, preparation, and usage of raw drugs are nowadays made by workers who do not have much in-depth know-how about the subject, the incidences of misformulation have increased a lot. On top of all this, a lot of herbs has gone out of use just because of ignorance.”

Arya Vaidya Sala was founded in such a situation by P S Varier to make sure that Ayurveda is practiced safely and scientifically.
“The priceless science of Ayurveda should scale new heights, its goodness should reach the common public and its uniqueness should be known worldwide“ These were his main mottos.

From the purchase of raw drugs to their storage and eventual formulation of medicines, each stage was meticulously scrutinized by himself personally. This made sure that the products were of excellent quality.

This made sure the much-needed availability of ‘Nirmita Aushadha” (readymade ayurvedic medicines as opposed to individual raw drugs) in the market and this helped the needy to a great extent. The example of AVS became a guiding light to new ayurvedic entrepreneurs and became the inspiration behind new ayurvedic drug manufacturing facilities all over the country.

So we can easily understand that in the growth of Ayurveda Vaidyaratnam P S Varier’s Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal has a commendable hand indeed.
